M1 means make one. It can be by knitting into the ladder between the knit stitch and the next knit stitch, or by making a loop with the yarn, twisting it, then putting the twisted loop over the right hand needle. You could always do your favourite increase (knit into the front and back etc). The goal is to have one more stitch than before.

was wondering in the pattern of the “Olympic Red Mittens” in row 1 k3 p1 k1 M1 k1 WHAT does M1 mean?? k is knit, p is purl, so what is M?? Please, I awaite your reply. I just bought the pattern but can not start the pattern until I know what M means thanks so much…
