Pattern: Olympic Red Mittens-Vancouver 2010

O Canada!

Olympic Red Mittens-Vancouver 2010
by Rachel Bearse

PRICE: $5.00 CAD

Everyone wants to support their country during the Olympic games. It is exciting to be the host country for the games this year, and Canada-themed winter clothing has become quite popular recently. Here is my contribution to the collection!

Knit a pair of Olympic Red Mittens for yourself and everyone in your family. Made from warm red wool, they will brighten your winter, and show your team spirit. A white maple leaf is knit into one side of the mitten, and the numbers 2010 knit into the other side.

This pattern is sized for a toddler (age 2-5), child (age 6-10), small adult, and large adult. For ease of knitting, all of the instructions are written out, and two full colour charts are provided.

These will be a nice quick knit for anyone who has made mittens before, and a great starter project for those who are eager to try.

“This pattern, by Canadian knitter Rachel Bearse, has the maple leaf and the 2010 knitted right in with white yarn, as opposed to the applique & decal design on the official red mittens. I have knit myself a pair and I love the hand knit loveliness and special softness that only the loving touch of human fingers can produce.” (www.buyredmittenscanada.ca)

  • Hi, I knit my pair last week after seeing the pattern on this site. I like my home made, hand knit ones way better than than the official 2010 red mittens that are listed on my red mittens website, though. My hand knit mitts are way softer and more beautiful than the mass produced official mittens.
BTW are we violating the VANOC trademark by making something with their logo of the 5 interlocking rings? Can you just see all us knitters in court with the International Olympic Committee? What a trip!

was wondering in the pattern of the "Olympic Red Mittens" in row 1 k3 p1 k1 M1 k1 WHAT does M1 mean?? k is knit, p is purl, so what is M?? Please, I awaite your reply. I just bought the pattern but can not start the pattern until I know what M means thanks so much...

M1 means make one. It can be by knitting into the ladder between the knit stitch and the next knit stitch, or by making a loop with the yarn, twisting it, then putting the twisted loop over the right hand needle. You could always do your favourite increase (knit into the front and back etc). The goal is to have one more stitch than before.

    hope this helps.

There are no interlocking rings on the mitten pattern for sale on this site.
  • Believe it or not: Vanoc also owns the rights to that number 2010, and a number of other interesting words, including a couple of lines from our national anthem 'With glowing hearts, we see thee rise' I have had to re-write my red mitten website to remove all kinds of common words. Check out my re-write - it's comical
